The CICO method success story – 132lb / 60kg lost during lockdown

This story, when I first read it, made my day. It’s actually one of the reasons why I wanted to document these stories in one place, because collectively they show us that weight loss can work, for you, for me, for anyone. This reddit user lost 40kg and his wife lost 20kg and they look like completely different people. I love his response to the question “are you happier now”. He said, “I absolutely am – I can run further, jump higher, sleep better, enjoy going to the gym, find it easier to focus, and I sweat less.” All non-scale victories (NSV) that are just as important as the number on the scale.

This is u/snagwich. Habit, routine and the support of his wife helped him to lose his weight. Plus the CICO method.

The stats

Male
Weight loss: 88lbs / 40kg (plus his wife lost 44lbs / 20kg)
Method: CICO method

There are thousands of weight loss success stories that should be shared to a wider audience, to inspire others to take their own weight loss journey; to provide proof that weight loss can be achieved. These stories are all individual experiences, with different approaches to weight loss. My hope is that you will read these stories and, as you learn what worked for them, it may help you to lose your weight. These are real people, with busy lives, who have achieved real success.

How many calories a day were you eating?

Making sure we did over 10k steps per day, and we were also doing some light weights and cardio inside our apartment during quarantine. Usually around 1400-1800 calories per day (for me, my wife was eating less).

How do you curb your food cravings while you’re home? I snack when I’m bored and at home

Yeah I also have a tendency to snack when I’m bored, so we just stopped buying unhealthy snacks. We were also following a fairly strict diet for a while that had us on 5 measured meals (or snacks) per day, so it felt like we were eating regularly anyway. The snacks in between breakfast/lunch and lunch/dinner were things like rice cakes with almond butter, or dried apricots and nuts, in moderation of course.

Looking good! How many calories were you doing a day?

The weight dropped most consistently when I was eating around 1600-1800.

Would you attribute it to habit or sheer force of will? And what triggered the decision to start?

For me personally I think the habit/routine is what’s helped a lot. I go to gym nearly every day and kinda feel a bit guilty when I don’t. But the calories are easily the biggest part. Portion size has been the biggest change for me, I was eating way too much before and weighing everything helped me realize that.

As for a trigger – there wasn’t really an event, but the start of working from home during COVID meant that I had no excuses left for overeating at work, and because my partner was with me all the time, every meal we were eating was together so I felt much more aware and accountable for what I was eating.

How Much Weight Did Your Wife Lose?

She said she lost around 25kg (50lbs) in total.

Are you guys happier now?

I absolutely am – I can run further, jump higher, sleep better, enjoy going to the gym, find it easier to focus, and I sweat less.
